Greece raises the €2 limit on online casino bets
The Greek government has said that it will relax the limitations on player wagering in the online poker and casino industries.
The government will raise the €2 maximum bet on online casino games (slots and table games) to €20, which is good news for market leaders.
The rise in maximum wagers, which was announced by the Hellenic government gazette, will take effect immediately in May 2022 and also apply to online poker and its related RNG games.
The modifications come in response to the Ministry of Finance's Year-1 evaluation of Greece's reinstituted gambling regulation.
The government increased the jackpot amount on games of chance and slots from the current ceiling of €70,000 to €140,000, which is another excellent development.
A additional technology update from the Hellenic Gaming Commission (HGC) will enable authorized operators to shorten game/spin timings from three to two seconds.
The HGC also disclosed that it would extend the deadline for operators to establish connections to its centralized monitoring system until December 2022.
The Finance Ministry's decision to increase wagers on online poker and casinos was applauded by HGC President Dimitris Ntzanatos, who noted that his department had supported the decision in a recent auditing report of Greek gaming.
The 15 foreign and domestic companies that have maintained Greek market licenses will welcome the adjustments to online casino wagering after observing a decade-long regulatory transformation starting in 2011, when Greece was compelled to examine its gaming laws by the European Court of Justice (ECJ).
